WeChat. The not so obvious elephant in the room.

What do you really know about WeChat? If you're like me, before I seriously started to study how to sell to Chinese, I knew only it was a chat app. Just like WhatsApp. Nothing more. But then I spoke with my friend Warren who happens to be the first WeChat Marketing Specialist in Singapore and my jaw dropped. To cut the long story short here's a short video made by New York Times to get you up to speed:

Chinese tourists out-shop everyone

3,416,475 Chinese tourists land in Singapore every year. Each of them carries on average 823 dollars. This money is literally burning a hole in their pocket. They just can't wait to spent it on shopping, entertainment and food. Numbers from Singapore tourist bureau tell us a crazy story -> that they shop like there's no tomorrow. Spending twice as much as Australians, Japanese or Americans AND according to Nielsen data the budget is the least of their concerns.

Your brand message just bounces off the Great Chinese Firewall

Yes. That's right. If you use traditional media like Google, Facebook or Instagram your brand message in China is nowhere to be seen. According to official statistics only 0.2% of Chinese have a Facebook account so you might as well kiss your Fan Page goodbye. WeChat users on the other hand are multiplying like rabbits. As of last month 1,098,000,000 people have WeChat installed on their phones and staggering 82% of them use it DAILY.

WeChat is like the ring from Lord of the Rings. It's literally the One App To Rule Them All. And yes, it's very precious. If, and only if, you know how to use it to your advantage.
